Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any significant prize-giving event approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to recognize unsung work and satisfy the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
