"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the band?" a message reads. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

The trio are speaking from home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in for their new album, I Quit.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the honor isn't lost on the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge milestone," adds Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the female artists that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The project came out of a phase of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that odd in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The lyrics follow departures and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them determining in the moment who they want to be.

"I adore description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to consciously practice blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That newfound confidence called for a different sonic direction – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The band's honesty shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

A former partner ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Legacy

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their standing in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide fan base.

Yet the sister act will consistently be their primary focus.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was little," says Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
